DIY: grand cru gardening

photo from LLH Designs

What do you do when you're running out of space in your garden?  Build more garden!

I work for a wine company, and we often have these wooden cases lying around, about to be discarded - it breaks my heart a little because some of these boxes are actually really pretty.  My friend Gianna, who is fortunate to have a little patch of backyard in San Francisco, uses these boxes as planters, and told me how to prep them.  Jules was amused by the sight of me picking out a drill bit and boring holes...I am by no means a "power tools and elbow grease" kind of lady - so if I can do it, ANYONE can!

gather your boxes

get out your power drill

drill holes for adequate drainage!

The next steps are entirely optional, as you can actually begin planting in the unfinished boxes.  But, to slow down the eventual breakdown of these boxes, you will need to remove all stickers and tape,  from the outsides of the boxes and rinse any debris off of them, sand them, rinse again, and prepare them for painting with a waterproof sealant.  Stay tuned!

  1. Thank you! I had to do the project in two parts, to allow for drying between steps...but soon my lavender and mint will have new homes! Yay!

  3. Jen! We ALWAYS have a ton of boxes. Will have to have them sent down from our Napa warehouse, but I can usually get several at a time. Will definitely FB you when I get some more :)
